Tuesday, Jan. 31st

Feel free to keep working on your POETRY VIDEO.  The next time we get the lab will be Feb. 8th.  The project is due on Feb. 15th.

We did the introduction to the SHORT STORY UNIT, and in particular, your PANEL PRESENTATION.  Everyone has signed up for a story and a date.  If you were not here, you were assigned a story and date.

Your group of six will create a MOVIE TRAILER of your story, and lead a panel discussion on the CONTENT (themes, issues, problems, solutions) and the STYLE (short story feature, literary techniques…) of the story, followed by a PROVOCATIVE QUESTION for the class to discuss.

We demonstrated this with “Gentlemen, Your Verdict” today.

Please read the story you have chosen.

Monday, Jan. 23rd

We finished discussing “The Hollow Men” and then went over how to write a commentary through looking at an example.  You will be writing a FOUR PARAGRAPH commentary on Wednesday, Jan.25th on one of the poems we have studied this unit.

  1. Open with an anecdote about a personal experience related to the poem. In the last line, connect your experience directly to the poem.
  2. In the second paragraph, discuss the CONTENT of the poem.  What is the poet’s experience?
  3. In the third paragraph, analyze HOW the poet conveys his/her experience.  HOW do the key words, connotations, devices, patterns contribute to the overall effect?
  4. In the last paragraph, show that your experience, and the poet’s experience is UNIVERSAL.  Connect it to one of the “big questions” we discussed.
